How long are men in Switzerland required to pay maintenance to their former wife?

The duration of maintenance to a former partner varies by case. The Federal Supreme Court recently emphasised that payments should ideally last as briefly as possible, since each partner should support themselves after divorce.

The precise duration depends on factors including marriage length, finances, work experience and labour-market prospects of the recipient. It is nevertheless possible to agree an arrangement with your partner, which the court generally accepts.

The maintenance obligation ends no later than retirement or the death of either partner.
